3 BEST Ways to Maximize Retention

1. CLEAN LASHES

CLEAN LASHES! This is the first on the list and one we THINK would be common sense – but can be overlooked, especially when the lashes LOOK clean. There can be oils or residue left over from a cleanser that we can’t see. Of course, there are the obvious signs of left-over make-up, build up, etc., and we know all of these are major retention killers – but it’s the UNSEEN problems that a lot of lash artist forget about. That is why it is so important to do a cleanse or prime before every application or fill! Be sure that the cleanser you are using is 100% OIL FREE – many “Lash Cleansers” out there still have ingredients like Glycerin, or Glycerol – which are both oils! These ingredients can leave behind a residue which will also cause poor retention. This is why BeautéCode’s Lash Bath is made from all-natural ingredients and is sure to be 100% oil free – we wanted to be sure it rinses away CLEAN!

2. QUALITY ADHESIVE

Having a quality adhesive is the BEST way to be sure that those lashes stay put! With so many options on the market these days you may be wondering “how do I know if my adhesive is good?” Here are a few quick tips to ensure your using a quality adhesive:

- Check the ingredients. The main ingredient in all of our adhesives is Cyanoacrylate – however, there are a few different types. The ones you want to steer clear of are Methyl and Methoxy. Methyl has super strong fumes and is dangerous for the clients’ eye. Methoxy is less dangerous but has an exceptionally low adhesion, the lashes won’t last long at all.

The best is Ethyl-Cyanoacrylate, it has an average fume (still safe for clients) and a strong adhesion.

However, this ingredient may still cause irritation for some, which is where Butyl comes in. Butyl has a very low fume, but also low adhesion, meaning the extensions may not last as long.

- Check your environment! All adhesives have a range of temp/humidity where they work their best! Be sure your temp/humidity are in the optimal range for your adhesive.

- Be sure your adhesive isn’t old! Our adhesives all have a shelf life – check with your provider to be sure what that time frame is, but the rule of thumb is 4 to 6 weeks opened, and 12 months unopened.

- Choose an adhesive with the right dry time for your personal needs. If you work a little on the slower side and you’ve purchased an adhesive that dries in 0.5-1 second – this can cause you some problems as the adhesive will begin to cure before you’ve placed the lash causing a weak bond.

3. AFTERCARE

Aftercare in one of the most important ways to maximize retention, and unfortunately, the one we have very little control over. The best advice here is to clearly communicate to your clients what they need to do. You can do the best set you’ve ever done, but once they walk out that door – it’s up to them to care for them! Having Aftercare retail kits are a great way to help your client out, these include a 100% oil free Lash Bath, soft Lash Bath Brush, Lash Wand, and an aftercare instruction card. You could also include a contoured sleep mask for the side/face sleepers!

Following these 3 tips, you should be able to create and keep a strong bond, both with the lash AND the client!!
